There is a process to getting a record deal, its not always the easiest thing to get your music out there. You must first understand how record labels truly work.
You must begin to play on a consistent basis and begin to develop a devoted local fan base. Once you start being recognized by the general public and continue getting your music known, you begin to move to the next level in music. Realizing that the recording industry has changed over the years, it is still a corporate structure like any other business. As a new artist you may never deal with a CEO or many of the people at different levels of the music business, no matter how big or small the record company is. Your biggest obstacle is getting past the gatekeeper. In the record business this would be the “A & R” department or coordinator. A&R stands for “artists and repertoire.” Without being referred by A&R, it is almost impossible for you to get signed by Not Only Street Records. Sending a demo tape to a record label is usually a complete waste of time, money and Cds. NOSR is so flooded with demo tapes that we do not have time to listen to them all without a recommendation. The correct way to getting noticed is through a person who has the ear of the A & R department or one of our music artist. Once our A&R feels like you may have something to offer the label you then have a foot in the door. Sending a demo tape, inviting them to a gig you are playing, meeting in person, or any way you can get their attention is how you should first spend your time. Competition is fierce when it comes to getting a recording contract so don't ever give up. If your really talented don't give up hope, 16 new acts do make it each year. |
